- My first experiences in volunteering and helping the underserved date back to my years at Fairfield College Preparatory School ('91) where I worked in area soup kitchens and with Habitat for Humanity. In college (Villanova University '95) I participated in a Habitat for Humanity trip to Ghana in West Africa. It was there that I decided I was going to pursue work in international development. This led to my service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania ('96-'98). During my time in Mauritania I developed my interest in medical and public health work. Subsequent to my Peace Corps experience and traveling around Africa for 8 months, I completed my pre-reqs for medical school and started a dual degree program MPH/ MD degree (at UNC-CH and ECU). East Carolina University- Brody School of Medicine has a very strong primary care focus and has an extensive history of students that participate in both the domestic and international Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. During my senior year of medical school I was accepted to serve as the third international Schweitzer Fellow from ECU and am currently working in Lambarene, Gabon where Albert Schweitzer first opened a hospital in 1913.
